ANION EXCHANGE SEPARATION OF COBALT FROM STEEL AND OTHER FERROUS SAMPLES

A quick and accurate method for the determination of cobalt in iron and steel samples is reported. The separation of cobalt from iron and other elements present in iron and steel samples was affected on an anion exchange resin. It is based on selective adsorption of various ion chlorides present at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid. The amount of cobalt was determined photometrically by forming its nitroso-R-salt complex. read more

MASS SPECTRA OF SOME PYRANO-1,2-OXAZINES (PART-I)

Under electron impact the fragmentation of 7-chloro-4,5-dioxo-2-cyclohexyl-4H, 5H-pyrano[3,4-e] [1,3] oxazine (I), 7-chloro-4,5-dioxo-2-(1'-Phenyl cyclopentyl)-4H, 5H-pyrano [3,4-e] [1,3] oxazine (11) and 7-chloro-4,5-dioxo-2t,butyl-4H, 5H-pyrano[3,4-e] [1,3] oxazine (111) has been studied. The most prominent fission in these three compounds involves the breaking of bond (alpha) to the oxazine ring giving abundant ions of substituentat C2 and a bicyclic pyrano oxazine m/e 198. In compounds II and III the ions from substituent at C2 make the base peaks of the spectra. The ion of  mass 198 loses CO2 in all these compounds. Fragmentation similar to retro Diels-Alder reaction has also been observed of variable importance in these compounds. The higher mass regions in the spectra of compounds II and III have smaller peaks due to facile fragmentation of  side chains. Chlorine is retained till last stages of fragmentation. read more

GRAVIMETRIC AND OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES OF FULLY HYDRATED COBALT (II) EXCHANGED A-ZEOLITES

This paper reports the water content per unit cell and diffuse reflectance spectra of five samples of fully hydrated Co(II) A-zeolites with different CO2+ ion loadings. It is suggested that each of the hydrated Co A-zeolite investigated contains per unit cell one Co (H2O)62+ complex in the centre of beta cavity (or sodalite unit) [1] and the other CO2+ ions reside as hexa-aquo complexes in the alpha cavity of the zeolite framework. Small shift of band maxima toards higher frequency for samples with lower Co2+ ion loadings was measured and interpreted. read more

ACHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION AND PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDY OF VICILIN FROM CHICKPEA (CICER ARIETINUM L) SEED

Total salt-soluble protein was extracted from chickpea Cotyledens and was precipitated with different concentrations of ammonium sulphate into fractions. 0.60% and 60-100%. Albumin was removed from fraction 60-100 by dialysis at 3-5oC against H2O. pH 4.1, and globulin of the fraction was chromatographed on DEAE-cellulose column for separation of vicilin from protein complex. Isolated Vicilin was tested for freedom from contaminants, Chromatoelectrophoretically it was pure. Sedimentation curve also witnessed about its homogeneity. Maximum elution on celite column was with 76% ammonium sulphate concentration. Elution constants on hydroxylapatite and DEAE-cellulose colums were 0.40 M and 0.26 u phosphate buffers respectively. Sedimentation coefficient was 6.72 S. Vicilin was found rich in the isoleucime and poor in arginime in comparison with the results obtained by Boulter and Derbyshire (1971) for the amino acid composition of vicilin of chickpea seed. read more

VARIATIONS IN THE REFRACTIVE INDEX INCREMENTS OF CELLULOSE ACETATE IN ACETONE WITH RESPECT TO CONCENTRATION AND TEMPERATURE

In order to make use of light scattering technique for the determination of molecular weight distribution etc of polymers it is necessary to know the refractive index increment of the system. In this work we have determined the refractive index increment of cellulose acetate in acetone solution. The concentration of the polymer was varied from 1.0 x 10-5 g/ml to 1.0 x 10-1 g/ml. For this purpose two wavelengths of incident light were used. From this data the specific refractive index increment of the system is also determined. To characterize the polymer at different temperatures, we have determined the same parameter at different temperature  (10oC - 55oC) for three different concentrations and making use of three wavelengths of incident light. read more

NOVEL ALKYL PYRAZINE COMPLEXES OF LESS COMMON METALS-II

Alkyl pyrazines are found in plants and certain glands of some insects where they appear to behave as pheromones. We have initiated a project on the metal complexation of these alkyl pyrazines. We report the synthesis, elemental analysis, i.r., 1H and 13C studies of gold (III) halide complexes with 2,6-DMP (2,6-dimethyl pyrazine). A brief comparison is made with the corresponding 2,6-DMP-Pt(II) halide complex. Here, as in the case of 2,6-DMP-Pt(III) complex, metal-pyrazine bonding is evidenced through N-1 rather than N-4.read more

COLORIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF THIOL SUBSTITUTED HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS

A coloured reaction occurs by the interaction between the electron acceptor, 2,6-dichloroquinone-4-chlorimide and an electron donor thiol substituted heterocyclic compound. This reaction was applied to the determination of thiols by measuring the absorbance of the reaction product which was stable upto 30 minutes. The relative standard deviation for the method was found to be + 0.023 read more
